Selecting Marine Hoses & Lines – Tips to Consider

As a boat owner, there are many components that you have to invest in. From engines to structures and more, it’s important to ensure that your boat is properly maintained and working as it should. One of the parts you may need to become more familiar with is marine hoses, but they’re important to take on board. PartsVu is a Leading Boat Accessories supplier. With the help of our guidance, you can identify what kind of hose you need for your boat!

Choose the Right Hoses for Your Boat

When you’re looking to build or repair your boat, you can always count on Boat Parts from PartsVu to provide you with the highest quality marine hose and line products. But how do you know which hoses will work best for your needs?

We’ve put together this guide to help you make the right choice.

What’s the Difference Between Hose & Line?

Hose: Hoses are flexible, typically rubber or rubber-like material that connects your boat’s engine system components. They’re used to transfer fuel and oil between your engine’s tanks, filters, pumps, and other parts.

Line: Lines are usually made from steel or fiberglass-reinforced plastic; they connect components like pumps, valves, and gauges. They also carry electricity through your boat’s electrical system.

What Kinds of Hoses & Lines Are Available?

Many different kinds of hoses and lines are available today—each designed for specific uses on boats. Here are some common types:

Fuel Lines

Fuel lines are typically composed of rubber or a combination of rubber and fiberglass. They can also be made from natural or synthetic rubber, but they may not be as durable as those made with a combination of materials.

Bilge Pump Hose

The bilge pump hose should be able to handle the weight of the water that is being pumped out of your boat. If the hose is too thin, it cannot withstand the pressure without bursting or collapsing in on itself.

Shower Hose

Shower hoses are typically used to supply water to the showerhead. They can be made of vinyl or rubber and come in various colors and lengths. Shower hoses are available at most hardware stores.

Sanitation Hose

Sanitation hoses supply water to a sink or faucet in an area requiring more frequent cleaning than in other areas. A sanitation hose is made of vinyl or rubber and comes in various colors and lengths, much like a shower hose. Sanitation hoses are also available at most hardware stores.

Heater Hose

Consider the length of your heater hose. The length of your heater hose will depend on how far away from your engine you want to install it. The shorter the length of your heater hose, the less pressure it will need to be able to pump water through it at a given speed. Longer lengths will require more pressure to push water through them under the same conditions.

Fresh Water Flush Hose

You can also use a freshwater flush hose if you have a freshwater washdown system on board. This type of hose is used with fresh water and has a filter built in to prevent debris from entering your plumbing system when using it for cleaning purposes.

Engine Intake & Exhaust Hoses

The engine intake and exhaust hoses on your boat are important parts of the engine’s cooling system. These hoses carry the coolant through the engine and out again to help keep temperatures down and performance high. Choose hoses that are designed for use with your specific engine or manufacturer.

The Inner Tube

The inner tube is made of rubber or neoprene. It is thin and flexible but can also be reinforced with fiberglass or steel wire to make it more durable. The most common inner tube is made from rubber because it is inexpensive and easy to install. However, it can be prone to cracking over time.

Inner tubes should be durable enough to withstand pressures up to 150 psi (pounds per square inch) but not so strong that they cannot flex under pressure or are prone to breaking at regular intervals due to excessive force applied by users over time.

Reinforcement Layers

The reinforcement layer is the second layer of a hose. It is commonly made of steel wire or braided material but can also be made of plastic or rubber. The reinforcement layer supports the inner lining, making the hose more durable and sturdy.

The Connections

The connections on a marine hose are the most important part of the system. They must withstand the harsh conditions of seawater, sun, and saltwater spray.

The fittings used in marine hoses and lines should meet ABYC standards and be approved by Underwriters Laboratories (UL). These fittings will have a “Y” mark on them. Fittings that meet these standards are generally made from brass or stainless steel, which are non-corrosive.

When choosing connectors for your boat, you have a few options:

Swage (push-on) fittings

These are available in both male and female versions and are easy to use because they push onto the end of an existing pipe or hose. However, they can come loose from vibration over time due to their lack of locking mechanisms or clamps.

Crimp fittings

These are also available in both male and female versions and work by crimping metal rings onto a metal tube using special tools called crimpers that come with each set. They are more secure than swage fittings but require specialized tools to install correctly. They may not be practical for DIYers who still need to own these tools! If you do not own crimpers
